Decolonising carceral heritage: narratives of violence and independence in colonial museums in Goa, India

This article examines how two seventeenth century Goan forts, Reis Magos and Aguada, both now repurposed as museums after serving as colonial prisons, engage with local experiences of India's decolonisation. Using narrative analysis and on-site observations, the authors consider the manner in which different narrative approaches to colonial violence contribute to visitors' affective encounters with the past. The article analyses the museums' curatorial strategies, contrasting the Fort Reis Magos' focus on heroic, non-violent resistance with the Fort Aguada's more emotionally evocative approach that emphasises suffering and the memorialisation of human rights violations. The study explores the tension this reveals between national and local narratives of independence within India's centralised heritage management system, highlighting how these museums negotiate the political complexities of colonial history in the contemporary moment.
