Abstract: This article presents an experience report on the challenges faced by a scientific editor in the process of inviting and engaging reviewers in a national health sciences journal. Editing scientific journals is a complex task, often combined with teaching and research duties, and usually carried out without financial compensation. The significant increase in submissions after the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified reviewer overload, leading to refusals and delays that compromise the quality and periodicity of publications. The main obstacles identified include the shortage of specialists, the academic workload, and the lack of institutional recognition for peer review activities. The experience described shows that, although strategies such as public calls for reviewers, active recruitment of new collaborators, and the inclusion of authors as ad hoc reviewers have expanded the reviewer base, there remains a pressing need for recognition, incentives, and renewal to ensure the sustainability of peer review.
