A comprehensive review of Corporate Social Responsibility: towards a modified framework for effective implementation
Résumé fourni par la source
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has evolved from a nebulous notion of business obligation to society into a complex, multi-dimensional concept central to contemporary corporate strategy and sustainability. This paper traces the historical evolution of CSR, analyzing the shifting definitions and models from its early 20th-century origins to its current status. Drawing from a comprehensive review of existing literature, this paper identifies and categorizes the core features key to CSR and proposes a framework for its implementation. The review reveals that while a universal definition remains elusive, CSR is a context-dependent construct, influenced by cultural, political, and institutional factors. The paper further explores critical debates surrounding established models, such as Carroll's CSR Pyramid, and presents revised frameworks proposed for different global contexts. Finally, it examines the expanding scope of social responsibility beyond the corporate sphere, culminating in its diffusion to higher education institutions through the emerging concept of University Social Responsibility (USR), which is of growing significance in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within Agenda 2030. This review underscores the growing imperative for all organizations, including universities, to integrate the core features of social responsibility into their operations.
