Bridging Gaps in Digital Agriculture Education in Europe

The European Union has given special attention for supporting higher education institutions in widening countries that lag behind in research and innovation. Till now, non-widening countries have successfully fostered ecosystems for promoting collaboration between universities, leveraging advanced digital technologies. Digital agriculture comprises a particular area of concern for widening countries that requires adequate support to bridge the gap and achieve scientific excellence. Higher education institutions that provide agricultural courses can foster research and innovation while equipping the future agricultural workforce with essential skills in digital agriculture. The objective of this article is to study the current state and future needs of digital agriculture education in universities. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted in a sample of fifty faculty members in Greece, Serbia, and Belgium. Valuable remarks for the development of digital agriculture in higher education were provided for benefiting the stakeholders of the agricultural sector.
