Statistical investigation of Limbarda crithmoïdes (L.) Dumort subsp. longifolia essential oils phytochemistry variation and related biological activities according to the plant organ and the geographic origin

Chemotypic diversity of essential oils is tidally linked to plants adaptation to their environment and generally associated with a significant variability of their biological potentialities. This fact can be valuable at both environmental, pharmaceutical, and industrial scales, given the increasing demand from food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical manufacturers for effective and guaranteed preservation materials. In this context, this work aimed to apply a combination of statistical methods to study the variability of the yield, chemical composition and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of essential oils depending on the organ and the geographical origin in the edible and medicinal halophyte Limbarda crithmoïdes (L.) Dumort subsp. longifolia. Samples were collected in three bioclimatic regions and organs (root, stem, leaf, flower) were separated. GC-MS analysis revealed the great variability of the amounts and chemical composition of essential oils. The p-cymene, 10,11-dimethyle bicyclo [6.3.0] undec-1(8)-en-9-one, and thymohydroquinone dimethyl ether were identified as major compounds. Essential oils were dominated by mono-, sesquiterpenes hydrocarbons and phenylpropanoids. Displayed results showed that flower essential oils exhibited the best antioxidant capacities. Northern region roots produced the most effective essential oils. PCA analysis showed positive correlation between antioxidant capacities and oxygenated compounds. Antimicrobial activities were rather correlated with mono- and sesquiterpenes contents. Obtained results permitted the identification of new chemotypes of L. crithmoïdes (L.) Dumort subsp. longifolia essential oils. This work permitted us to deeply understand the distribution of these molecules on the scale of the plant as well as the variation of their biological potentialities for a better valorization of these metabolites.
