Role of Asparagus racemosus in the Amelioration of Diabetes and Associated Complications

Asparagus racemosus , a traditional medicinal herb widely used in Ayurvedic medicine, has demonstrated promising antidiabetic properties in preclinical studies. This chapter presents a comprehensive overview of the role of A. racemosus in regulating blood glucose levels and alleviating diabetes-associated complications, particularly in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Ethanolic extracts of the plant enhance insulin secretion by modulating K ATP channels and calcium influx in pancreatic β-cells and may also influence the cAMP signaling pathway. Additionally, the herb augments peripheral glucose uptake by promoting GLUT-4 translocation through AMPK activation in skeletal muscle cells independently of insulin signaling. Beyond glycemic control, A. racemosus inhibits intestinal carbohydrase activity, reduces oxidative stress, and exhibits strong antioxidant properties. These multifaceted actions contribute to its capacity to improve lipid profiles, attenuate diabetic nephropathy, inhibit advanced glycation end-product (AGE) formation, and mitigate sexual dysfunction. Saponins such as furoasparoside E and polyphenolic compounds like β-glucogallin are identified as key bioactives. While these findings highlight the therapeutic potential of A. racemosus in T2DM management, further molecular studies and clinical trials are warranted to validate its efficacy and safety in humans.
