Beyond ADS: SciX as the Next-Generation Platform for Earth and Space Science Research

For decades, the Astrophysics Data System (ADS) has been an indispensable tool for astrophysics research. Now, the platform has evolved into the Science Explorer (SciX) to meet the interdisciplinary demands of NASA's Science Mission Directorate, rapidly integrating resources from Astrophysics, Heliophysics, Planetary Science, Earth Science, and Biological & Physical Sciences. Built on ADS's robust foundation, SciX creates a unified hub for literature, data, and software discovery. This presentation will detail the remarkable growth and advanced capabilities of SciX since its introduction two years ago as a beta system, showcasing its differences from and enhancements over the traditional ADS. SciX goes beyond providing basic publication metadata by incorporating terms from the Unified Astronomy Thesaurus and features drawn from the IAU-USGS gazetteer of planetary names, enabling more precise and discipline-specific search and discovery. It features discipline-specific relevance ranking, providing search results tailored to the nuances of each scientific discipline. SciX provides greater depth of the research landscape through systematic indexing of high-level datasets and software, treating them as first-class research outputs. SciX also supports Open Science principles, promoting reproducibility and credit, by tracking acknowledgments of awards and mentions of software and data products in the literature. SciX expands the capabilities of ADS not only by indexing and exposing a larger corpus of earth and space research content, but also by providing a refreshed user interface featuring improved analytics and visualizations, semantic search capabilities, and better usability. SciX is fully aligned with the FAIR principles and Open Science initiatives, empowering researchers to discover and be credited for their publications, data, and software within an open, trusted platform developed by scientists for scientists.
