The Impact of Rural to Urban Youth Migration on Labor Availability for Banana Production in Janale District, Somalia

Despite the crucial role youth labor plays in sustaining agricultural production, rural-to-urban migration continues to deplete the labor force in many farming communities. This study investigates the impact of youth migration on labor availability for banana farming in Janale District, located in southern Somalia. Janale has historically been a major hub for banana production, yet in recent years, the area has faced a significant decline in output due to a shortage of agricultural labor. The research focuses on three main areas: the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of the participants; the effects of migration on the availability of labor for banana farming; and the consequences of labor shortages on farm productivity and household income. The study is based on data collected from 96 respondents through structured questionnaires administered in Janale town and surrounding villages. A descriptive research design was employed, and data were analyzed using SPSS software. The findings revealed that youth migration has negatively affected banana production by reducing the availability of active labor. In response, the study offers policy recommendations aimed at addressing rural employment challenges and encouraging youth engagement in the agricultural sector.
