Recovery Capital Applications in Policy and Practice

This chapter explores the practical use of recovery capital through a case study of the most widely used recovery capital tool, the REC-CAP (Cano et al, 2017; Best et al, 2023), in the US state of Virginia. The REC-CAP assessment, part of the Advanced Recovery Management System (ARMS), measures recovery capital to create personalized recovery plans and guide interventions. The chapter details the application of recovery capital in policy and practice, highlighting its impact on individual behaviour and community capacity, and provides user experiences around implementation and impact. By reviewing the REC-CAP’s history and providing real-world examples, the chapter aims to enhance understanding of recovery capital’s role in shaping addiction recovery policies and practices, and to suggest directions for future research around implementation and application.
