Bridging academia and the gig economy: Role of AI and CBIML in developing agile management professionals

Purpose- The rise of the gig economy and remote work is reshaping employment models and skill requirements, driving a shift in management education. Competency-Based Integrated Management Learning (CBIML) offers a strategic framework to develop agile, job-ready professionals. This study examines how CBIML, supported by artificial intelligence (AI) tools, can enhance employability in the gig economy. Methodology- A quantitative approach was adopted using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) via Smart PLS 3.0 on data from 299 recent management graduates, collected through non-probability sampling. Findings- CBIML significantly improves skill development and employability when integrated with AI-driven learning tools. Industry demand positively moderates this relationship, enhancing curriculum relevance. Implications-Business schools should embed CBIML with AI-based platforms to align learning pathways with emerging gig economy roles, fostering digital fluency, adaptability, and preparedness for freelance, project-based careers with greater confidence, flexibility, and sustainable career growth.
