Mapping gastroenterology training across Europe: insights from the ESBGH Manpower survey

⇒ Gastroenterology services across Europe are under increasing demand due to demographic shifts, rising incidence of gastrointestinal diseases and expanded indications for endoscopy.⇒ There have been longstanding efforts to harmonise gastroenterology training through European frameworks like the European Specialty Examination in Gastroenterology and Hepatology.⇒ Prior studies, including surveys from two decades ago, have already highlighted significant disparities in specialist training structures across European countries. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS⇒ This is the most comprehensive and up-todate survey of gastroenterology training in Europe, encompassing data from 33 countries.⇒ It identifies persistent and significant heterogeneity in training pathways, duration, selection processes, certification systems and post-training service requirements.⇒ It shows limited uptake and recognition of the European Board examination, with only 12% of countries using it as a national certification alternative.⇒ Post-training service obligations are still in place in 24% of countries, highlighting uneven workforce deployment policies.Protected by copyright, including for uses related to text and data mining, AI training, and similar technologies..
