Virtual Reality Training in Early Nursing Education: A Randomized Controlled Cohort Study

A randomized controlled cohort trial was conducted with second-semester nursing students to evaluate the effect of a brief virtual reality (VR)–based training on hygienic hand disinfection. Using block randomization (1:1), participants were allocated to an intervention group, which was exposed to a single 20-minute immersive VR training session on hygienic hand disinfection, or to a control group, which received a sham intervention consisting of a 20-minute instructional video on the same task. Training success was assessed immediately afterwards in a standardized Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE); for the evaluation, the first five independently performed hygienic hand disinfections were rated and used to determine the effect of the training. This trial is embedded as a focused substudy within a larger, preregistered study on VR-supported training in nursing education, which is registered on the Open Science Framework (OSF; https://osf.io/fg43r/overview?view_only=2baf86a199f448b8a5d528a87389cedb).
