Relationship Between Perceived Stress and Spousal Support Among Females with Miscarriages in Pakistan

Background: Pregnancy remains a critical period for females. In this phase, females may directly face many issues, such as medical, physical, and psychological. While facing miscarriage in this time period puts females in a more devastating situation. In Pakistan, 29 out of 1000 females with miscarriages face stress very commonly. That is why, in this phase, spousal support provides moral and psychological support to cope with stress. Aim: To check the association between perceived stress and spousal support among females with miscarriages in Pakistan. Method: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted on a sample of 118 females aged 18-45 using a purposive convenience sampling technique. At the same time, using the Perceived Stress Scale and the MacArthur Relationship Questionnaire (MRQ). Findings & Results: Perceived Stress was significantly negatively associated with MRQ as -.509**(p>.01). As significant mean differences across several miscarriages on Perceived Stress with F (3,114) = 3.68, p < .05. Similarly, significant mean differences across the duration of miscarriages on Perceived Stress Scale with F (4,113) = 2.15, p< .05. Conclusion: We found a relationship between miscarriage experience, number of miscarriages, and the onset of psychological distress, and our results are suggestive of an association of husband support with a lower level of psychological stress. Social support, especially spousal support, can help women experiencing miscarriage cope with perceived stress.
