Early Wildfire Detection with Metal Oxide Gas Sensors: A Smart Approach for Real-Time Monitoring

Detection of forest fires is a crucial challenge for environmental protection and infrastructure safety. In recent years, the increasing impact of fires, aggravated by climate change, has highlighted the need for more efficient early detection systems. Traditional methods, such as thermal sensors and smoke detectors, have limitations in large or inaccessible areas. In this context, electronic systems have emerged as an innovative alternative for air quality monitoring and fire detection, using gas sensors to identify characteristic combustion compounds. This work presents the development of a compact system specifically designed for fire detection in controlled conditions and in the open field. The proposed system integrates multiple gas sensors, allowing real-time data acquisition and storage. In addition, future lines of research are discussed, including the development of advanced data filtering and analysis algorithms to minimise external interference and improve detection accuracy.
