Imagination and Creativity in the Religious Realm
Le résumé fourni par la source
Abstract How do the religiously devout manage to “believe” in spirits and deities, when those spirits and deities are generally invisible and don’t leave behind reliable evidence? And how do they achieve a sense of interaction with such beings, given their invisibility? These are the evidential and interaction problems of religious practice, respectively. This chapter discusses research that suggests that the devout deploy their imaginative capacities in solving both problems: Their “beliefs” may in fact be imaginative attitudes, and they deploy constructive imagination in developing and using creative religious artworks and practices that deliver low-level, visceral feelings and intuitions that can be interpreted as interactions with the divine.
