Gene Therapies for Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is an emerging progressive ophthalmic disorder, leading to severe visionary consequences. Its onset is generally determined by the degeneration of the inner layer of the macula in the central retinal region, resulting in permanent loss of vision. Several therapeutic remedies have been identified and practiced as a source for treatment of ARMD, while the rate of disease suppression still remains a challenge. Gene therapy has been vitally gaining interest among researchers worldwide as an aid for the treatment of various disorders and malfunctions. Subsequently, utilization of gene therapy has also been studied and investigated for the treatment of ARMD, primarily, focusing on the vascular endothelial growth factor, as a target gene. This chapter provides an in-depth information regarding the current, progressive, and future developments in the utilization of gene therapy as a source of treatment for ARMD.
