Understanding of Parkinson's disease: pathology, diagnosis, therapies, and importance of biomarkers

Being a complex and progressive neurodegenerative disorder, Parkinson's disease (PD) is manifested to loss of dopaminergic neurons from substantia nigra pars compacta region of the brain which is the accumulation of Lewy bodies or neurites. Tremors, fatigue, bradykinesia, postural dysfunction, and uncontrollable muscle movement are the main symptoms found in PD. The diagnosis is sometimes difficult pertaining to late appearance of motor as well as non-motor symptoms and often misdiagnosis. The current drugs and therapies available only alleviate the symptoms of the disease in the early stages but cannot modify or cease the disease progression. The need of the hour still remains the identification of such biomarkers that can help early diagnosis of the disease to develop more effective drugs and therapies.
