Exploring Graduate Student Views on Robotics Policy Relevant Information

This full research paper explores the perspectives of Computer Science (CS) and Public Policy (PPOL) graduate students on the presence of embodied AI systems (i.e., AI-powered robots) in public spaces. Robots in public spaces pose unique challenges due to their embodiment, emergence, and social valence, raising societal, ethical, and regulatory concerns. These challenges disrupt established legal norms, requiring nuanced policies. As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, public concern about its societal impact grows, emphasizing the need for robust technology policies and ethical education. Research shows that public perceptions of AI are often more negative than views on algorithms, associating AI with fear and uncertainty. While studies address public perceptions of AI, little research focuses on how future technologists and policymakers perceive embodied AI and its challenges. To address this, we used the Narrative Policy Framework (NPF) to investigate CS and PPOL students' views on concerning robots and related policy issues. Through semi-structured interviews with three CS and four PPOL graduate students, we identified five categories of concerning robots, with self-driving cars and humanoid robots being the most prominent. We examined 10 policy challenges, 16 policy solutions, and the roles of key stakeholders. These findings offer insights into interdisciplinary education, AI policy development, and robotics literacy, fostering collaboration between technical and societal fields and preparing students to develop ethical AI technologies and informed public policies.
