Use of construction and demolition waste and steel slag
Résumé fourni par la source
The use of recycled and alternative aggregates in geotechnical works and transport infrastructure construction, namely, roads and railways, is envisaged as a solution with environmental, economic, and social benefits. Their application as unbound granular materials in pavement layers (base, sub-base, and capping layers) also has the advantage of allowing the incorporation of significant quantities of those materials from different origins. Waste processing, along with proper identification, characterization, and evaluation, is essential to maintain the materials in the production cycle for a longer period, maximizing their value and ensuring an adequate quality. The existence of legislation is fundamental to support and promote the application of these secondary raw materials. On the other hand, and due to the growth in the output of steel industry worldwide, the generation of the steel slag and the need to identify sustainable solutions for its use are of major importance. The application of steel slag in geotechnical works and transport infrastructure construction as an alternative material represents a relatively abundant and promising solution. Complementary to the presentation and discussion of the previous subjects, several applications of construction and demolition waste for unbound and hydraulically bound mixtures and of steel slag aggregates for unbound mixtures are addressed.
