Up to this point, the mechanisms of graft function have been considered in terms of the patterns of anatomical connectivity and/or neurochemical influence between the grafted cells and the host brain. However, although not yet well studied, a number of lines of evidence are accumulating to suggest that graft efficacy needs to be considered in psychological as well as structural terms, in that the training and experiences of the animal can have a substantial influence on the functional efficacy of a neural transplant.
