Schwannoma of Right Ureter Presented as Right Adnexal Mass: A Case Report

Schwannomas are tumors of myelinated peripheral nerve sheath, potentially occurring in any body part.Their occurrence in retroperitoneum especially in genitourinary tract is extremely rare.Due to their abnormal localization and slow growth rate, the clinical presentation does not appear until the tumor is substantially grown.Clinical presentation and radiologic findings are vague and non-specific which makes the pre-operative diagnosis difficult.Definite diagnosis is made based on histopathological and immunohistochemistry examination of the resected tumor.Given the pre-operative misdiagnosis, the anatomical complexity of retroperitoneum, and presence of vital structures, obtaining complete surgical resection is challenging.Therefore, great surgical technique and precision is required to avoid recurrence or any neural/vascular damage.We reported an extremely rare case of ureteral schwannoma that was diagnosed pre-operatively as adnexal tumor based on radiologic findings.We aim to shed light on this entity as their accurate diagnosis depends on high index of clinical suspicion.
