The effects of weight stigma are widely evident in society, manifesting e.g. as weight-related mistreatment and causing significant harm to an individual's well-being. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of experiences of weight-related mistreatment in the Finnish adult population. The data (n=4,614) were derived from the Healthy Finland Survey 2023 representing the adult population (aged +20 years). The questionnaire inquired experiences on inappropriate treatment because of weight in the past 12 months as well as information on education. Height and weight were measured during the health examination, and body mass index (BMI, kg/m²) was calculated and categorized into four groups: normal weight 18.5–24.9, overweight 25–29.9, obesity 30–34.9, and severe obesity ≥35 kg/m². The weighted prevalence of weight discrimination was analyzed using logistic regression, considering sampling design and non-response. Overall, 11% (95% confidence interval, CI, 9−12) of women and 6% (95% CI 4−7) of men had experienced weight-related mistreatment. Prevalence varied by BMI: among women, 4% (95% CI: 3–6) of those with healthy weight, 6% (95% CI: 5–8) with overweight, 20% (95% CI: 15–24) with obesity, and 33% (95% CI: 27–39) with severe obesity reported such experiences. The corresponding figures for men were 1% (95% CI: 0–2), 4% (95% CI: 2–6), 11% (95% CI: 7–15), and 20% (95% CI: 14–27), respectively. The prevalence did not differ between educational groups, but it was higher among those aged 20–64 years compared to the oldest age group. Weight-related mistreatment is common in Finland, particularly among women with obesity. Recognizing weight discrimination and increasing awareness are crucial for promoting ethical discourse on weight and fostering respectful treatment.
