Abstract This paper constructs a BP/ α -V 2 O 5 metamaterial structure by stacking a black phosphorus (BP) layer onto a semi-infinite orthorhombic-phase vanadium pentoxide α -V 2 O 5 crystal. By varying the angle between the anisotropy axis of the BP layer and the optical axis of α -V 2 O 5 , the in-plane anisotropy is enhanced to achieve a large Goos-Hänchen (GH) shift. By optimizing the geometric parameters of this model and implementing three geometric configurations of α -V 2 O 5 , a GH shift of 11 640 λ 0 is achieved. Based on this model, a gas sensor is designed. When the ambient refractive index changes from 1.0001 to 1.0002, the sensitivity reaches 2.07 × 10 6 λ 0 RIU − 1 . For gas detection from air to helium, the sensitivity achieves 2.31 × 10 6 λ 0 RIU − 1 . When measuring sulfur dioxide concentration variation from 50 ppm to 100 ppm in air, the sensitivity attains 9.41 × 10 6 λ 0 RIU − 1 . These results provide a theoretical framework for designing novel gas sensors.
