A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW ON THE POWTHIRAM DISEASE IN SIDDHA SYSTEM OF MEDICINE

Siddha medicine is one of the most unique and traditional system of medicine in the world that has been in public practice over 5000 years in the Southern part of India, which was hailed by Siddhar and followed by the Indian people. Sage Agathiyar known as the father of Siddha medicine had enumerated about 4448 diseases in humans. Siddha medicine revolves around the fundamental principles of Panchabootham, Mukkuttram, Udalthathukkal, 96 Thathuvam, Suvai etc. Sage Yugi has described about the Ano Rectal Diseases as Moolam, Powthiram etc. Powthiram is the disease that affects the Perianal region and Anal canal. Sage Yugi has classified Powthiram into 8 types in his treatise “Yugi Vaithiya Chinthamani 800”. Powthiram can be correlated to fistulae of various aetiology affecting Genito urinary and Perianal region in modern system of medicine. This review attempts to correlate these 8 types of Powthiram (Aetiology, Signs, symptoms) based on Symptomatology to the Fistulae of Genitourinary and Perianal regions in modern medicine, for further understanding of the disease and aiding screening and diagnosis of Powthiram in respect to modern science to reach out different Siddha treatment regimen in effective way.
