Legal Framework and Industrial Insight for Treatment of Waste

Industrial waste management needs to be regulated to ensure that the impact of the waste generated by the industries is within allowable limits. Industries generate different types of wastes depending on the raw materials used, production process, products manufactured, and the environmental settings. Often, there are resources that are recoverable from the waste. Acknowledging this, the regulations in waste management are increasingly becoming responsive to the circular economy principle. This chapter presents an overview of the rules, regulations, and guidelines, both Indian and international, that are applicable to the management of industrial waste. These regulations have been useful largely in preventing harm to the environment arising from poor waste management. However, there are many challenges—economic, cultural, and socio-political—to the effective implementation of these regulations. Overcoming these challenges is important to create a sustainable, resource-efficient future.
