Innovation is widely acknowledged as the engine that drives productive and growing economies across the globe, with a wide range of benefits. Increasingly, corporate governance boards are moving from mitigating risk to encouraging management to make breakthrough innovations, which necessarily means embracing risk. On the opportunity side, perhaps the most inspiring aspect of developing a new strategy for a technical organization is the potential to address some of the most epic strategic challenges of the day. This chapter presents a few areas that are ripe for strategic innovation. The initiative to strategically drive the organization in a new direction was, therefore, motivated by the realization that much greater agility and innovation would be essential to meet new challenges in the face of an evolving and more treacherous business environment and national security landscape. Innovation is the enabler to successfully implementing and achieving the goals of the organization's strategy.
