Résumé fourni par la source

This paper illustrates a program to evaluate the impact of motor vehicles on urban air quality. The data base developed is then used to aid in formulating abatement strategies to minimize this impact. As part of this program, data has been collected which have been used to estimate emissions from automobiles, taxis, trucks and buses operating in urban areas. Much of the required urban trucking data were not previously available, so in 1974, a special survey was conducted which generated two types of information. Data for Emission Estimates: Data required to estimate urban truck emissions included: truck population; gross vehicle weights; vehicle ages; type of fuel; annual vehicle miles travelled; and driving speeds. Information for Abatement Strategies: Information which could be used in formulating and evaluating abatement strategies as well as refining and improving emission estimates included: distribution of operations within the CBD and the other Urban Areas; diurnal distributions; fuel consumption; idling and driving times; maintenance characteristics; financial characteristics; truckers' opinions; and estimates of future trends in the industry.
