Developments over recent years have included the introduction of many new materials, together with new types of flexible pipe joints. Along with these, the construction industry has changed over from imperial to metric units. Many British standard specifications have therefore either been revised or withdrawn, and new specifications have been published. Vitrified clay pipes are now available in longer lengths and larger diameters, while upvc pipes have been developed to new standards. Ductile iron has replaced cast iron for some conditions, while GRP pipes have become available for the larger diameters. Rigid joints for any type of pipe have almost disappeared from the scene and the use of flexible joints is now almost universal. (Author/TRRL)
