Using polymers to give railway ballast designed mechanical properties

In this paper, the concept of polymer reinforced ballast is discussed. The disadvantages of ballast in a dynamic loading environment are outlined and the requirements for a geocomposite are stated. This leads on to the development of a polyurethane based system, designed to meet these requirements. The benefits from being able to design and add engineering properties in to the ballast, such as tensile strength and ductility, whilst utilising the ballastrs compressive strength are discussed, together with the advanced computer models developed. Several areas of application and common permanent way problems that have been solved using the polyurethane ballast reinforcement technique are detailed and the benefits available to the industry are summarised.
