Positron emission tomography (PET) images often suffer from motion artifacts primarily caused by respiration. While respiratory gating is a common technique to minimize this blurring, it results in images with fewer counts and increased noise. To address this trade-off, respiratory motioncompensated reconstruction (RMCR) aims to generate images with reduced motion blur without compromising the noise level of ungated reconstructions. RMCR relies on gated reconstructions and the estimation of motion between different respiratory phases. The final RMCR image is created by warping the gated images to a reference image based on the estimated motion. While accurate motion estimation is crucial for the final RMCR, the choice of gating strategy and motion compensation methods also significantly impacts the outcome. In this study, we investigate various respiratory gating strategies to optimize the performance of RMCR. The direct motion warping method's reliance on the number of gates makes it vulnerable to noise and the spacing of gated images, as demonstrated by our experiment. Motion compensation with minimal warping leads to superior RMCR.
