Le résumé fourni par la source

Total-body Positron Emission Tomography (TB-PET) is now being used in clinical practice; however, wider adoption in hospitals requires a reduction in construction costs [1]. We are developing a cost-efficient TB-PET system utilizing plastic scintillators [2,3]. This study discusses the current development status, including tests of individual detectors with SiPMs and new simulation results based on the finalized design. During the experimental phase, we tested individual detector units using SiPMs connected to the axial ends of plastic scintillator strips with a collimated beam of 511 keV photons from a Na-22 isotope source. We characterized the detector performance using two types of SiPMs, from Hamamatsu and Onsemi. Based on these characterization results, we evaluated performance across different scintillator lengths and selected two lengths for use in the final design of the total-body Jagiellonian PET (TB-J-PET). With these selected lengths (33 cm and 60 cm), the TB-J-PET geometry was redesigned, and simulations were conducted using GATE [4] to evaluate system sensitivity, scatter fraction, and spatial resolution. TB-J-PET will be built using the latest generation of J-PET technology, which is presented and discussed in this study. The first generation of the J-PET scanner was built using 192 plastic scintillator strips, each 50 cm long, and read out by PMTs [5,6]. The second generation is a modular, portable PET scanner constructed from 312 plastic strips, also with an AFOV of 50 cm, and read out by SiPMs [7,8]. In this work, we report on a 254 cm long system currently under construction, funded by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
