Shadow puppetry is a renowned form of intangible cultural heritage, yet digital story creation remains inaccessible to nonexperts due to the complexity of character design, animation sequencing, and cultural conventions. This article presents ShadowTale, a design prototype that leverages generative artificial intelligence (AI) to explore how nonprofessional users might engage in digital shadow storytelling. Users can input vague story ideas through prompts, which are automatically decomposed into storyboards with characters and actions, and then iteratively refine them through intuitive interfaces. An exploratory user study with 12 participants showed that ShadowTale could act as a catalyst for accessible storytelling, enabling users to balance AI-driven support with personal expression, and opening avenues for broader cultural applications. Taken together, these findings highlight design implications for AI-assisted cultural storytelling: the need to balance efficiency, creativity, and authenticity in supporting the preservation and reimagination of cultural heritage.
