Trends and Perspectives on the Use of Biochar for Ammonium Removal: a Bibliometric Analysis

The intense industrial activity, particularly in fertilizer production, combined with poorly managed anthropogenic practices, has caused serious impacts on aquatic ecosystems. One of the main issues is the leaching of ammonium ions from fertilizers, which significantly contributes to the eutrophication of water bodies. The present study aims to conduct a bibliometric survey of the scientific literature from the past 15 years on the topic of ammonium ion removal from water bodies, supporting the development of studies and tools to address this environmental issue. The bibliometric study employed tools such as VOSviewer® (version 1.6.20) and Microsoft Excel® (Microsoft Office 365®) to perform scientometric and statistical analyses. The data obtained highlight the prominence of major scientific powers in this field, with China leading the rankings in terms of total publications and citations. However, when analyzing the average number of citations, a different perspective emerges, revealing the strong performance of countries with lower publication and citation counts. The analysis of the most relevant keywords enabled the development of strategies to optimize researcher’s time and to filter the most significant topics within their field of study. Finally, the bibliometric study reveals a growing number of publications in recent years, reinforcing the importance of this field within the scientific community. Furthermore, future perspectives are discussed regarding the use of modified biochars, aiming to enhance their contaminant removal capacity, as well as the challenges associated with the development of technologies to improve their modification processes and ensure appropriate disposal after adsorption.
