Phytochemicals and Biological Activities of Flowers of Diplotaxis Species (Wall-rocket)
Résumé fourni par la source
Research on bioactive compounds is crucial for improving human health and driving innovation in the food, agricultural and biotechnology industries. The genus Diplotaxis , part of the Brassicaceae family and widely distributed globally, includes around 40 species, some of which are edible, essentially Diplotaxis tenuifolia , Diplotaxisharra , Diplotaxiserucoides , Diplotaxis muralis , and Diplotaxis simplex . Besides their use as food crops, Diplotaxis species have been valued in traditional medicine of several civilizations for their health-promoting effects. In fact, the flowers have notable nutritional properties related to their chemical composition. Indeed, they are rich in essential minerals, particularly potassium, calcium and magnesium, as well as fatty acids such as α-linolenic acid, and phenolic compounds, predominantly kaempferol and isorhamnetin. Glucosinolate compounds, also identified in these plants, along with other phytochemicals, exhibit notable biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and hypoglycaemic, supporting their potential role in preventing diseases like cancer and diabetes. This chapter provides an overview of the phytochemistry, biological properties, potential pharmacological applications, and current research gaps concerning Diplotaxis species.
