Engaging with Oral Community Language Collections in Australia: Practices, Challenges, and Ways Forward

Oral language collections are an invaluable resource for understanding the history, society and language of the people whose voices they capture. However, the usability and longevity of many such collections are at risk due to limited awareness and acknowledgment of the specific considerations required to manage them with the necessary integrity, care, and sensitivity. In this article, we outline some of the issues relevant to oral language collections from minority, under-represented communities, taking as a case study speakers of community languages in Australia – that is, languages other than English spoken by migrants. We consider current practices and persistent challenges relating to the management of legacy collections; skewed representation of migrants; risks associated with emerging computational technologies; and relevant ethical implications. We conclude by highlighting some key considerations for addressing these challenges that we hope will help inform broader discussions and future practices.
