Surgically Induced Astigmatism and Postoperative Outcomes in the Akreos AO60 Scleral Fixated Intraocular Lens With Gore-Tex Suture

Background and Objective: This study characterizes surgical outcomes of sceral fixation of Akreos AO60 intraocular lens with Gore-Tex sutures and the correlation of surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) with specific patient factors. Patients and Methods: A total of 76 eyes from 68 patients who underwent Akreos AO60 intraocular lens placement by a single surgeon were included. Of these, 29 eyes were included for the analysis of SIA using Naeser's method of polar value analysis. Results: Postoperatively, patients were myopic (mean spherical equivalent: −0.96 diopters) with a mean SIA of 1.12 diopters at 176 degrees. Polar value analysis showed significant correlations of SIA with age ( P = .011), and preoperative astigmatism ( P = .007). No correlation was observed between incision location and SIA or visual acuity. Conclusion: These findings suggest that patient-specific factors such as age and pre-existing astigmatism are critical in determining SIA extent, while incision location does not significantly impact visual outcomes.
