Minimally Invasive and Intraoperative Ultrasound-Guided Surgery in the Management of Ovarian Cancer Recurrence

Recurrent gynecologic cancers are characterized by heterogeneity of clinical, pathological, and genetic features. No single therapeutic strategy has been established in cases of recurrent disease, and the decision-making process is critical for gynecologic oncologists. Treatment plans are selected based on multiple factors, including anatomical site of relapse, infiltrative pattern, primary treatment(s), chemo- and/or radio-sensitivity, and molecular characteristics of tumor ( 1 –6). The role of secondary cytoreductive surgery (SCS) is completely different from upfront treatment, thus requiring a careful balance between expected clinical benefits and potential morbidity. Consequently, it is difficult to identify which patients with recurrent disease will benefit from surgery.
