India boasts a diverse array of languages, landscapes, music, and dance forms, which perfectly reflect the rich history of natural dyes in textiles throughout her stretch. Historically, ancient textiles were dyed using natural sources derived from various parts of plants, animals, minerals, fungi, and insects. Indian textiles traveled worldwide due to their brilliance and unparalleled color combinations; many are still being used. Applying metallic salts enhances the fastness properties of dyed substrates and is often used to create a wide range of colors. Fermented iron solution for black, madder for red, catechu for brown, and indigo for blue were primarily used to get the lustrous colors. Every dye source has its inherent chemistry and character. A scientific analytical discussion of each dye source sheds light on historical knowledge and critically compares it by examining modern concepts.
