Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) represent a promising, cost-effective supplement to traditional photovoltaic (PV) systems to harvest solar energy into electricity. In this study, aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) with excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) effect are synthesized to simultaneously suppress reabsorption and achieve high photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) in the aggregate state. In-depth spectroscopy studies and theoretical simulations are conducted to elucidate the luminescent mechanism. Consequently, colorless and visibly transparent LSCs are fabricated based on the best performance AIEgen 3ANT-HBT, achieving a solar-to-electrical power conversion efficiency of 0.5%, which approaches the theoretical limit (0.68%) for an ideal device harvesting only UV radiation with no reabsorption and 100% PLQY. More importantly, high efficiency can be maintained on a large scale, exceeding 400 cm² with negligible self-absorption losses. This study demonstrates that a rational molecular design leveraging AIE and ESIPT characteristics provides a promising pathway for developing high-efficiency, large-area, and visually transparent solar energy harvesting technologies suitable for real-world applications.
