Ethnomedical Contributions Toward Neurodegenerative Diseases

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are illnesses that cause a gradual loss of nerve structure and neurological function, which further results in problems with cognition, movement, and social and spiritual development. 288 In searching for potential treatments for various illnesses, ethnomedicine and indigenous populations’ knowledge have proven to be invaluable resources over time. Alkaloids, flavonoids, and polyphenols, which have demonstrated neuroprotective effects in preclinical studies, are examples of bioactive compounds found in traditional medicinal plants. These compounds have provided promising leads in the search for new neuroprotective agents, symptom relief, and even the potential to alter the course of the disease. Despite the difficulties in conventional medical procedures, ethnomedical contributions provide an array of information and prospective therapeutic possibilities. However, collaborations between indigenous practitioners, scientists, and modern medical professionals show promise for closing the gap and developing evidence-based treatments that combine the best aspects of both systems. Future studies should concentrate on elucidating the mechanisms underlying ethnomedical interventions and carrying out clinical trials to confirm their effectiveness. Here in this chapter, we will discuss the sources, phytochemicals, and biochemical activities of the plants having neuroprotective efficacy, and also emphasize the molecular cascades and pathological targets of herbal plants for neurodegenerative disorders.
