A Contemporary View of School Consultation

The purpose of this initial chapter in this Handbook ’s third edition is to reinforce school consultation as an evidence-based approach fully capable of promoting transformative change schoolwide, within classrooms, and for individual students and their families. First, we provide a comprehensive definition of school consultation with core components that function in the context of various forms of educational programs. We follow with a description of foundational aspects (i.e., “big ideas”) of school consultation. These ideas collectively situate school consultation as an educational approach that effectively supports the alignment and integration of evidence-based practices in schools, and promotes the knowledge and skills needed by school professionals to continually improve school systems and practices to meet the needs of children and youth. We close this chapter by briefly considering empirical evidence that supports the efficacy of school consultation.
