RFID transponder chips with sensing capabilities have become widely available in various Internet of Things (IoT) applications. In this study, we introduce a novel form factor of RFID sensors—SensYarn, a sensor embedded within a yarn structure. SensYarn integrates a UHF RFID chip with temperature sensing functionality (EM4325), bonded to metallic filaments that serve as dipole antenna arms. The assembly is encapsulated in epoxy and further braided with nylon fibers to form a durable yarn thread. SensYarn is robust enough to withstand standard textile manufacturing processes, including knitting, weaving, embroidery, and repeated washing, all while maintaining reliable temperature sensing performance. Each SensYarn can be wirelessly interrogated from several meters away, providing both temperature data and unique ID information. Our experiments demonstrate that SensYarn can be seamlessly integrated into fabric. A fabric embroidered with a$3 \times 3$array of SensYarns successfully functioned as a smart garment, capable of detecting and mapping temperature distribution across the human body.
