A Solar-Powered Smart Dustbin with Integrated Air Purifier and IOT- Based Real Time Monitoring System

With cities expanding at an ever-increasing rate and the number of people in urban centres increasing even further, efficient waste management is among the key challenges in building smart, sustainable cities. Traditional waste collection practices fail - as bins overflow and conditions become unhygienic, with increased operations cost on the inefficient routes. In order to solve this, our research presents a HSM which is a hybrid smart dustbin system that will make waste management smarter, cleaner, and more energy-efficient.Using IoT technology, the system monitors bin fill levels in real time using ultrasonic sensors. It also includes global system for mobile communication module GSM. As the container fills up to its maximum level, the system will automatically notify the control centre that the bin is full. At the same time, it sends an SMS alert to the assigned driver for garbage collection with the exact bin details that should be attended to immediately. This prompt notification mechanism ensures that waste is removed in time avoiding overflow. The solution is helpful in minimizing unnecessary pickups and fuel consumption hence reducing both environmental and economic costs.Besides waste level monitoring, the system is equipped with an air purification feature that triggers under the presence of dust or odor – enhancing the surrounding hygiene and air quality around the bin. Powered by a AQI sensor and a 12V fan which is controlled through a relay module and controlled by an ESP32 microcontroller. A small LCD display with indications of system status on the spot, and everything is powered from a solar battery providing independence from external sources and the absence of the load on the environment.This paper describes the design of the system, its hardware elements, and logic of its communication. The results demonstrate that our smart dustbin not only increases the efficiency of waste collection, but also improves the cleanliness of urban areas — practical and scalable solution for smart cities.
