As a key device of the pulsed power drive source, the operating characteristics of the high-power gas switch largely determine the application capability of the system. In this paper, a technique to enhance the breakdown stability of graphite electrodes by SiC modification is proposed. The SiC modified layer is generated on the surface of graphite substrate by vapor deposition, and the micro-morphology and construction quality of the modified layer are characterized by scanning electron microscope and energy spectrometer. A high-voltage pulse gas switch test platform was established. The breakdown characteristics of the modified graphite electrode gas switch under the action of millisecond pulse voltage and uniform electric field were investigated experimentally. The regular understanding of the breakdown voltage amplitude and dispersion of this switch is obtained. The results show that under the operating conditions of 0.15 MPa N2 and 5 mm electrode spacing, the graphite electrode switch has an average breakdown voltage of 33.69 kV with a relative standard deviation of 4.50%, and the SiC modified electrode switch has an average breakdown voltage of 36.62 kV with a relative standard deviation of 2.15%. Utilizing the advantage of dense and uniform coating of the modified layer, the electrode breakdown location is more concentrated, which improves the switch breakdown characteristics and reduces the breakdown voltage jitter. Meanwhile, the good mechanical properties of the modified layer also solved the problem of graphite electrode particle shedding and effectively reduced the erosion products.
