For those taking up office as jurist, writer, historian or jurisprudent, the conflicts lived with in 2025 are difficult and dynamic. They relate to both ‘external’ and ‘internal’ demands of an office – crises of international and national law or justice, or the demands of the adequate conduct of university life and scholarship. How a jurist or writer cultivates a relationship to their public role, and maintains a considered vigilance about their duties, rights, liberties and privileges when certainties of official and unofficial life are under threat and shadow is of importance to many scholars, and of jurisographical significance to the conduct of our own activities. In this chapter we draw attention to aspects of the virtue of constancy, principally in examples of writing by Torinese scholars, Norberto Bobbio and Natalia Ginzburg, in which they respond to experiences of fascism, war and their aftermath. Our study and examples consider how constancy forms part of an inherited training in the conduct of jurisprudence and literature traditions, and how it might be inherited in another time and place.
