Oncosentinela: A Digital Health Platform for Laboratory Monitoring in Pediatric Oncology (Preprint)

BACKGROUND Pediatric and adolescent cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death within this demographic, requiring precise diagnostics and timely treatment. In Brazil, delayed diagnoses particularly highlight the need for tools to optimize the flow of anatomopathological examinations. OBJECTIVE Here we describe the development of Oncosentinela, a digital dashboard designed to visualize and monitor the processing of anatomopathological examination requests for suspected cases of pediatric and adolescent cancer. METHODS This descriptive study utilized retrospective data from a pathology laboratory in Joinville, Brazil, covering the period from April 1998 to December 2024. An interactive and dynamic dashboard was created using Microsoft Power BI to display demographic data, examination types, and laboratory turnaround times. Data were collected via SQL queries, integrated with public databases from the National Register of Healthcare Facilities and the Brazilian Post Office, and subsequently validated manually. RESULTS The Oncosentinela dashboard was developed using retrospective data from 1,919 individuals, encompassing 3,153 examination requests. The cohort showed a balanced distribution between sexes (female: 1,639/3,153, 51.6%; male: 1,514/3,153, 47.7%). Biopsies (n=1,313) were the most frequent examination, with a mean turnaround time (TAT) of 7.83 days (SD=5.17). Geographic analysis identified the América neighborhood as the highest-demand region, accounting for 34.6% (1,091/3,153) of requests from 10 distinct healthcare facilities. CONCLUSIONS : The Oncosentinela platform demonstrates that the implementation of a real-time monitoring dashboard is a feasible and effective strategy to improve the management and operational efficiency of pediatric oncological pathology services.
