The impact of parenting stress on problem behavior in girls with precocious puberty: Exploring the mediating role of family expressiveness

To explore the mediating role of family expressiveness between parenting stress and problem behavior in girls with precocious puberty (PP), and to provide new ideas to improve the psycho-behavioral problems in this population. This study included 266 parents of girls with PP who completed an online questionnaire survey conducted at the Institute of Child Health Care of Jinan Children's Hospital. The Parenting Stress Index-Short Form, the Family Expressiveness Questionnaire, and the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist (4–16/parent version) were used to collect data. The scores of parenting stress, negative expressiveness, and problem behavior showed significant positive correlation with each other, and parenting stress showed significant negative correlation with positive expressiveness. Mediation analysis showed that negative expressiveness partially mediated the relationship between parenting stress and problem behavior in girls with PP, whereas positive expressiveness had a masking effect on this relationship. Parenting stress may influence the problem behavior in girls with PP through negative expressiveness, whereas positive expressiveness may mitigate this association. Therefore, adopting effective methods to alleviate parenting stress, reduce negative expressiveness, and increase positive expressiveness among caregivers may help prevent and reduce problem behavior in children with PP. • Parenting stress is significantly associated with increased problem behaviors in girls with precocious puberty. • Positive expressiveness within the family may buffer or mask the negative impact of parenting stress. • Negative family expressiveness partially mediates the link between parenting stress and child behavior problems.
