Effect of density, moisture content, and feed speed on the surface quality of planed eucalypt boards

The main goal of this study was to verify the best combination of density, moisture content, and feed speed on the surface quality of Eucalyptus grandis boards aimed at deck manufacturing. Tangential boards were sampled and sorted by density (level 1: 468 kg·m-3 to 630 kg·m-3; level 2: 631 kg·m-3 to 970 kg·m-3) and moisture content (level 1: 14.0% to 16.0%; level 2: 16.1% to 20.0%). A four-side planer molder was used, at three levels of feed speed: 3 m·min-1, 6 m·min-1, and 9 m·min-1. Twelve treatments resulted from the interaction of these three factors. Surface quality was assessed immediately after machining by visual-tactile analysis and stylus surface profilometer readings (parameters Ra, Rz, and Rt). These data were submitted to ANOVA in a factorial arrangement, while data from the visual-tactile analysis (grades) were transformed into ranks and analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis H-test. The best surface quality results were obtained with denser (631 kg·m-3 to 970 kg·m-3) and wetter (16.1% to 20.0% moisture content) boards at the highest feed speed (9 m·min-1). The visual-tactile analysis is recommended to assess the surface quality.
