Recognising and responding to depression in older people: a practical guide for nurses working in care homes

Depression is a common and frequently underdiagnosed condition among older people living in care homes. Symptoms are sometimes misattributed to normal ageing, cognitive decline, dementia or physical illness, resulting in delays to diagnosis or misdiagnosis. This article explores the unique presentation of depression in older people living in care homes and describes the role of the nurse in recognising and responding to residents' mental health needs. A fictitious case study of a care home resident presenting with depressive symptoms illustrates how nurses can recognise early signs of depression, advocate for specialist input, and implement practical, evidence-informed interventions. Emphasis is placed on the use of validated screening tools, and the importance of nurse-led advocacy within the multidisciplinary team. Evidence-based treatment approaches, including non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions, are discussed. Empowering nurses with the knowledge and confidence to recognise and respond to depression in late life is essential for improving the quality of life of older people and promoting mental health awareness in care home settings.
