Global Zoonotic Diseases and Public Health: A One Health Perspective

Zoonoses are diseases that are transmissible from animals to humans and pose a global health threat. Approximately 75% of newly identified emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases have an animal origin. Over the past two decades, we have observed multiple zoonotic outbreaks, such as COVID-19, Monkeypox, Ebola, Zika, and Chikungunya. The complex relationships among animals, humans, and the environment increase the possibility of disease transmission. Given the era of globalization and rapid change, addressing this complex health issue with a multidisciplinary approach is pertinent. One Health (OH) is a holistic approach that works in a strategic, coordinated, and proactive direction. This integrated framework aims toward an enduring balance and optimal functioning of the human, animal, and environmental health sectors. This chapter reveals the politics of advanced zoonotic research, guidelines, and initiatives and addresses effective practices in warfare. This chapter examines several zoonotic and OH cases using ethnography and quantitative data on global narratives, research networks, and political and historical disease control practices. Public health (PH) protection demands the togetherness of zoonosis-fighting disciplines and sectors. Hence, this chapter presents the OH approach as a tool for addressing zoonotic diseases and PH issues for academics, the public, and policymakers.
